About the art

Heike Ruschmeyer can be categorized as a documentary artist and political actions play an important role in her work. “I don’t see painting as decoration, neither as a way to portray the history”, she says. Ruschmeyer works with victims of violence and crime scene photographs in her art. However, family and everyday life are also important themes. “My mother always said that I didn’t have enough fantasy, but for me the reality of life is more unbelievable than fantasies”, Ruschmeyer says. The paintings obtain the role of a medium to Ruschmeyer, as painting is a part of a slow working process. “There must be an exchange process taking place between me and the people I paint. An exchange that takes its time”, Ruschmeyer says regarding her working methods.
