About the artist

Schjølberg creates layered artworks rich in symbolisms and characterized by an overall unsettling effect that asks for an attentive reading of each canvas. The viewers are pushed to reconsider the first impression of a candid fairy-tale world, as eerily violence and nightmarish elements are disguised beneath its surface. These emerge through the twisting and the contrast of gloomy settings with the recurrent presence of enchanted creatures and children whose facial features are blurred in a disquieting manner.

Artist about the work:

“With my work Camouflage I explore the spaces around memory and childhood. Growing up, I enjoyed the escape provided by books of all kinds, and making fantasy drawings with a particular love of fairytales and magic wonderland. As adults our perspective changes. The stories you once knew and the memories you hold are viewed from a reinterpreted reality. Through the use of oil painting on canvas, building layers with paint that is blurred out, I strive in my work to depict a realm somewhere between dream and reality. The two girls with masks balance between the beautiful and the unsettling, leaving the viewer left with enough breathing space to project their own interpretation into the work”.
